Why Four Pillars Contain Eight Characters

The name BaZi literally means “eight characters.” In Chinese metaphysics, the year, month, day, and hour of birth are written as four pairs of characters. Each pair forms a separate pillar: the Heavenly Stem on top and the Earthly Branch below. Together, they create a chart traditionally used to interpret character and periods of life.

There are ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches. Their combinations recur in a 60-step cycle—most familiarly, the 60-year cycle of the year pillar. The animal of the Chinese zodiac is only the year branch: one character out of eight, not a person’s entire chart.

How the Five Elements Form a Bigger Picture

The stems and branches are associated with Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, as well as the principles of yin and yang. The starting point of an analysis is the Heavenly Stem of the birth day, known as the Day Master. The other characters are considered in relation to it: what supports it, what restrains it, and what draws on its energy.

This is not a matter of counting elements according to the idea that “three Fires are better than one.” The season of birth, relationships between the characters, and hidden stems within the branches all matter. In traditional logic, Wood in spring and Wood in winter exist under different conditions. So, the absence of an element in the visible part of a chart does not automatically mean it must urgently be “added” through clothing colors or a talisman.

Why Exact Birth Time and Place Matter

For a calculation, the date, time, and city of birth are usually provided. BaZi months are counted according to the solar seasons of the Chinese calendar, and the year boundary is generally linked to Lichun, the Beginning of Spring, around February 4. This is not necessarily Chinese New Year.

The hour pillar corresponds to an interval of roughly two hours. The time zone, historical clock changes, and the chosen method for correcting to solar time can affect a calculation near an interval boundary. If the birth time is unknown, it is best to state this directly: the hour pillar will remain undetermined, and the reading will be incomplete.
