What Is MBTI? How a Personality Test Builds a Profile from Four Letters

E and I: where your energy comes from

MBTI is a typology that describes a person's preferences across four dimensions. On each one, you lean toward one of two poles, creating a four-letter code such as INFP or ESTJ. There are 16 combinations in total. They are not sixteen rigid boxes to put everyone in, but a simplified map of familiar ways of perceiving the world and acting in it.

The first dimension is extraversion E and introversion I. In this model, it shows where your attention tends to go: outward, toward people and events, or inward, toward your own thoughts. After a lively gathering, do you want to keep going—or spend a quiet evening alone? That is a clue, not a final answer. An introvert may love parties, and an extravert may need solitude.

S and N: facts or the connections between them

The second dimension describes how information is perceived. The S pole stands for sensing: attention to observable facts, details, and concrete experience. The N pole stands for intuition: an interest in patterns, possibilities, and hidden connections. Here, “intuition” does not mean predicting the future.

Imagine you are viewing an apartment. One person first notices the layout, water pressure, and street noise. Another immediately imagines how their life will change after moving in. Both can check the faucet and dream about a fresh start; the question is which mode comes more naturally.

T and F: what decisions are based on

The third dimension is thinking T and feeling F. These labels can be misleading, as though some people were given logic and others only emotions. In fact, they refer to preferred decision-making criteria. For T, consistency and universal rules are often more important; for F, values and the impact of a choice on people matter more.

For example, a group vacation needs to be rescheduled. One person will first compare prices and dates; another will think about whose plans will be affected. Neither approach makes someone smarter or kinder. In real-life decisions, both are useful.

J and P: a plan or open options

The fourth dimension is judging J and perceiving P: a preference for certainty or flexibility in outer life. Do you feel more at ease buying tickets in advance and planning the route—or leaving room for decisions along the way? This is not a division between organized and irresponsible people.

At scanhand.ru, the personality test includes 24 questions across the four dimensions and an AI-powered interpretation. Answer based on what you usually do, not on how you would like to appear. This is an MBTI-like questionnaire, not the official MBTI and not a diagnosis. The model has scientific limitations: results can change, especially near the middle of the scales. Use it as a reason to notice your habits, not as a rule for choosing a career or partner.
