Palm Signs: Cross, Star, Triangle and Grid
Beyond the major lines, palmistry also reads the small formations that appear at line crossings and on the mounts of the hand. A cross, star, triangle, grid, square or island each has a traditional meaning, with one essential caveat: a sign gets its meaning from where it appears, not from its shape alone.
The main rule: read a sign by its location
The same cross means entirely different things on the Mount of Jupiter and on the Life Line. That is why the question “what does a cross on the palm mean?” has no answer unless its exact position is known.
The second condition is clarity. Every adult palm is covered in a fine network of creases, and with enough imagination almost any shape can be found there. A sign is considered meaningful only when it is clearly visible, has distinct boundaries and is not part of the general pattern of skin lines. If you have to hunt for it, it is not there.
Third, signs do not override the lines. A favorable triangle on a weak, broken line does not make that line strong; it only suggests that the person has a resource in that area which they may not always use.
Cross, star and triangle
Traditionally, a cross marks a point of choice, change or tension. On the Mount of Jupiter, beneath the index finger, it is read as a sign of a strong union—one of the few clearly favorable crosses. Between the Head and Heart Lines, in the so-called Quadrangle, it symbolizes an inner search and an interest in questions of meaning. On the Life Line itself, it marks a sharp change in circumstances. A small isolated cross away from the lines usually means nothing.
A star, formed by several short lines meeting at one point, indicates a vivid but brief event: luck, an encounter or a sudden turn. On the Mount of Apollo, beneath the ring finger, it is considered a sign of recognition; on the Mount of Jupiter, success connected with status. On the Life Line, a star is read as a powerful shock. Here too, clarity matters: a blurry cluster of strokes is not a star.
A triangle is a favorable formation suggesting an ability that comes naturally, almost effortlessly. Its mount refines the meaning: on the Mount of Mercury, ease in negotiation and business; on the Mount of Moon, imagination; on the Mount of Venus, the ability to build close relationships.
Grid, square and island
A grid, a mesh of crossing strokes, is read as stagnation in the area represented by that mount: energy is present but spent without an outlet. A grid on the Mount of Venus is traditionally linked with emotional overload; on the Mount of Jupiter, with ambitions that find no application.
A square is the only sign considered protective. When a square encloses a break in a line, it is read as support during a difficult period: a turning point occurred, but the person came through it without destructive consequences. Such a square over a break in the Life Line is one of the tradition’s most reassuring signs.
An island, a small loop directly on a line, indicates a period of divided focus, when someone tries to hold onto two options at once and scatters their energy. After the island, the line usually regains its former clarity, and that is part of the sign’s meaning: the state is temporary.
A separate note is needed about signs said to predict illness. Palmistry is a symbolic tradition, not a diagnostic method; using palms for medical forecasts is inappropriate. Any worrying changes in the skin should be discussed with a doctor, not a palmist.
